Kathleen Brown, a Villa Maria Academy High School art teacher, has been selected as a member of the Scholastic Art Teacher Advisory Panel for the 2013-2014 school year. Brown was one of 10 teachers nationwide who earned a spot, competing against 170 teachers.

Scholastic Art is a fine-arts classroom magazine published by Scholastic. As a teacher advisor, she will offer her professional opinion as an experienced teacher about content related to Scholastic Art.

According to Scholastic Senior Editor Katie Brickner, “It was a tough competition. We received an overwhelming response from teachers expressing interest in joining our team. Kate’s enthusiasm, background, dedication to her students and willingness to provide honest feedback about Scholastic Art set Kate apart and made her an outstanding candidate.”

Brown, who has been employed by Villa Maria since 1994 and teaches a broad range of classes from freshman art to Advanced Placement studio art to ceramics, is honored to serve on the panel.

“I am thrilled to be part of such a prestigious group of colleagues and that I was considered for inclusion,” she said.

In 2011, Brown was awarded the Citadel Heart of Learning High School teacher of the year, an honor which recognizes teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty in the classroom. Most recently in 2012, Brown was selected to speak at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in New York City.
