The article notes that many synod participants would prefer the drafting committee be elected, instead of appointed by the Pope (as it is now). But, with all of the public jockeying for position by many participants, and the pre-Synod press conferences, interviews, and even books(!!), where some participants staked out their pre-determined positions, I think there is a much better chance at getting a fair summary of the proceedings with a Committee appointed by the Pope rather than elected by these folks who have been aggressively promoting their already-decided positions.
My own issue with this Synod is the glaring absence of any voting women, which makes it a little hard to take it very seriously. Hopefully, we’ll see some changes to canon law which will lead to women heading up a few dicasteries and will include more women’s voices in future assemblies.
