Like the 72 disciples in this Sunday’s Gospel, we are commanded by Jesus to go into our neighborhoods, our work place, our schools, our swim clubs, our shopping malls and give witness to people of the power of Jesus’ love by the way we live, in what we say and do.

Sunday’s Gospel shows that if a person wishes to follow Jesus, then Jesus will have to be first and central to the person’s life. If the would-be disciple does not realize this how will he or she be able to journey to Jerusalem? How will he or she be able to carry their cross?

Accept the crosses of daily life for the good of others

Msgr. Joseph Prior writes that in the Gospel for the Mass this Sunday, Jesus is saying that carrying the cross is not a “one-time” event or occasion but an integral part of Christian life. Carrying the cross will entail suffering but life will come through this act of giving. And Jesus can relate to our suffering and the sorrows we face in life.
