Gospel parables teach how to use our time wisely

In this Sunday’s readings for Mass, the question of time comes into play in a parable Jesus tells about Lazarus and the rich, especially when both characters die. The prophet Amos warns how the complacent waste time -- time that could be spent on care for the needy, for growth in personal goodness, for building a just society.

As wicked servant shows, when the master calls, get moving now

We are called to love God above all things, and to love the poor and needy who are abundant in our midst. The challenge is to respond immediately to their need. If the wicked servant in Sunday’s Gospel can respond to the demands of his master, we too should be willing to respond to the demands of our Master.

Sunday’s lessons on humility urge keeping God at center of our life

Jesus exhorts his disciples to live lives of humility. He says: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” In today’s passage from the Gospel according to St. Luke, Jesus gives two instructions on humility that help illustrate His saying on humility. Both examples involve a dinner for guests.
