NEXT: Office for Catholic Education announces review process for schools
While it may be feasible to close the four catholic high schools and merging of the elementary schools and then to suggest the nearby elementary and high schools for these students to attend, has the church ever considered how close the nearby public schools are, and that parents out of disgust may decide to send their children to these schools instead? Just imagine how much tuition will be lost if this happens?
These are indeed dark times for our church: school closings, crying children, unemployed teachers, parishes threatened with closures, and the stain of sexual scandal. It feels like life in a communist state at war with Catholicism. Perhaps a better analogy would be institutional suicide. Brick by brick, schools, churches are experiencing a great dismantling. The fading away of our beloved church continues…first it was the teaching nuns, then the number of priests per parish, now the schools and soon many churches have begun to disappear. We are called to witness as martyrs this great sorrow. May God comfort you Archbishop Chaput in this mess you have inherited.
My grandchild just started in one of the schools that is being consolidated. In order to attend this school and pay the tuition at the parish rate my son joined the parish. What will happen next year? Will he have to switch to the parishes where the school will be located?
So what provisions are being made for the hundreds of teachers and school employees soon to be out of work? It is very important that the Archdiocese does the right thing by these dedicated men and women.
