More than 950 children served by Catholic Social Services enjoyed a day of fun and games Friday, July 18 at Neshaminy Shore Picnic Park. The children, who attend one of 10 Out of School Time summer programs run by CSS throughout Philadelphia, ranged in age from elementary through middle school. Another 60 high school students served as counselors.

For many of the children, the picnic was a unique opportunity to get out into a beautiful, green park to have good summer fun. “It feels good to see them just being kids running around outside and having a great time,” said Nancy Hecker, St. Martin de Porres OST program director. “They get a chance to meet lots of new friends who attend one of the other OST summer programs from the various neighborhood communities that each program serves.”

The children enjoyed sports games, face painting, swimming, water balloon toss and a local DJ treated them to lively music, along with a delicious picnic lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs as well as healthy snacks. View video from the picnic. (Photos by Sarah Webb)
