In his Asian Journal, Merton writes: “And the deepest level of communication is not communication but communion. It is wordless, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity. We can discover an older unity. My dear brothers and sisters, we are already one. But we imagine that we are not. So what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be is what we are.”

Throughout his many writings, Merton often reminds us of our “original unity” by looking thorough the lens of childhood.

Whatever our age this simple and deep reflection on the child may cast light on our own lives as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, ministers and teachers of children — as well as our commitment to both the larger communities within which we live and the faith dialogue to which we are called. We care for and teach our children.
