De nuestro vicario

El otro día en el periódico se publicó un artículo mencionando la película “Hairspray”, ubicada en Baltimore durante los años 1960. En particular el artículo hacía mención del personaje principal Tracy Turnblad como un signo de enorme esperanza, no solamente para aquella época sino indudablemente para ésta también. «Tracy», una persona llena de vida, de alegría y de amor, como se aprecia en la música y el baile, es capaz de rebasar sus propios temores/preocupaciones para unirse clara y absolutamente con los demás, tratando de derribar las barreras del prejuicio y racismo. La promesa del «cambio para mejorar» está presente durante todo el espectáculo. Si usted no ha visto la película o el espectáculo, vale la pena que lo haga.

Llegamos a nuestra cuarta semana de Adviento y ese mensaje del «cambio para mejorar» se acrecienta cuando el nacimiento de Cristo se acerca.

Nuestra comunidad hispana acaba de celebrar la fiesta de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe – y ¡que celebraciones alegres, llenas de oración y de esperanza hubo en muchas de nuestras parroquias! Estamos inmersos en las «Posadas» en donde la Sagrada Familia busca un lugar para alojarse. La comunidad acompaña a la Sagrada Familia de puerta en puerta en nuestros vecindarios, no solamente para encontrar «albergue» sino para proclamar esperanza a todos los que presencian ésta demostración de fe en la importancia renovada del nacimiento de Cristo en nuestro mundo problemático.

No puedo evitar preguntarme a mí mismo: ¿Demuestro yo (¿o tú?) un poco de la alegría, la confianza, o el amor que Tracy Turnblad transmite, cuando proclamo «Preparen el camino del Señor»? ¿Son esas posibilidades «electrificantes», «sobrecargadas de energía», «repletas de promesas» que acompañan el nacimiento de Cristo evidentes en mis (y en tus) pasos estos días? ¡Eso espero!

How is the walk?

The other day in our daily newspaper an article appeared citing the movie “Hairspray,” set in the 1960s in Baltimore. In particular, the article cited main character Tracy Turnblad as a sign of tremendous hope, not only for that time but for today as well. “Tracy,” a person full of life, joy and love, as evidenced in the great dancing and music, is able to go beyond her own concerns/preoccupations and unite herself clearly and definitely, with others trying to break down the barriers of prejudice and racism. The promise of “change for the better” runs throughout the show.

We come to our fourth week of Advent and that message “change for the better” grows louder as the birth of Christ approaches.

Our Hispanic community has just celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe – and what joyous, prayerful and hopeful celebrations were held in so many of our parishes. We are immersed in the “posadas” where the Holy Family seeks a place to take up lodging. The community moves with the Holy Family door-to-door in our neighborhoods, not only seeking “lodging” but proclaiming the importance of the birth of Christ into our troubled world.

I can’t help but ask myself, do I (do you) evidence some of the joy, trust, love that Tracy Turnblad communicates as I proclaim “Prepare ye the Way of the Lord?” Are the electricifying, highly charged, laden with promise, possibilities accompanying Christ’s birth noticeable in my (and your) step these days? Hope so!
