St. Gabriel’s Hall of Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia recently won a Silver Award and $1,000 from the HealthierUS School Challenge, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
As part of the challenge St. Gabriel’s improved the health of its students by offering healthy items on its school lunch menu and emphasizing nutrition education and physical activity.
St. Gabriel’s serves delinquent, court-adjudicated boys in a residential program in Audubon, Montgomery County. It offers a year-round academic program as well as career and technical education in culinary arts, Microsoft Office, building and landscape maintenance, and construction.
HealthierUS School is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. As part of the award, St. Gabriel’s commits to providing a healthy school environment and implementing a school wellness policy throughout the four-year certification period.
Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia provides St. Gabriel’s its school lunch program.
