The U.S. Supreme Court today struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, ruling it unconstitutional.
DOMA, as it is called, recognized marriage as a union of one man and one woman when it was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It denies federal benefits to same-sex partners who are legally married in states where same-sex marriage is permitted.
CatholicPhilly.com will post a full story on the ruling soon.
Keep in mind that the role of the US Supreme Court is only to determine if laws, regulations, etc. are consistent with the US Constitution as currently written NOT IF THEY ARE MORAL. As Associate Justice Scalia has said numerous times, if the people want to know if something is moral, the last place they should look at is the Court. If enough people want to ensure their views become the law of the land, then they should pass an amendment to the US Constitution which will ensure that resultant laws, regulations, etc. are judged to be constitutional from a Federal perspective.
