Archbishop Nelson Perez issued the following statement Sept. 10, in English and in Spanish (below), on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Twenty years ago, we watched in shock and disbelief as the events in New York City, Washington D.C., and western Pennsylvania unfolded before our eyes. Although two decades have passed, our hearts still ache with sadness. Those evil and unimaginable acts extinguished thousands of innocent lives. We cannot and should not ever forget the magnitude of this tragedy.

It would have been easy to sink into the abyss of fear and despair that day. However, the American spirit prevailed in a time of crisis and shined forth with a resilient and enduring light. In the wake of disaster, our human family stood united in the presence of God.

His love flowed through us and inspired us to encounter one another with tenderness and mercy.

There are many events scheduled to mark the 20th anniversary of September 11th throughout the Philadelphia region and the nation. These commemorations rightly call on us to reflect on a dark moment as well as the fragility of the gift of life. At the same time, they present an opportunity to renew our trust and hope in God.

Please join me in praying for all of those still suffering from the moments that shattered our world 20 years ago. May they find comfort and peace in God. Let us also pray with grateful hearts for the daily sacrifices of our service men and women, police, firefighters, and rescue workers. May the Lord wrap them in his mantle of protection now and always.

Hace veinte años, vimos con asombro e incredulidad cómo los eventos en la ciudad de Nueva York, Washington D.C. y el oeste de Pensilvania se desarrollaban ante nuestros ojos. Aunque han pasado dos décadas, nuestros corazones todavía duelen de tristeza. Esos actos malvados e inimaginables extinguieron miles de vidas inocentes. No podemos ni debemos olvidar nunca la magnitud de esta tragedia.

Hubiera sido fácil hundirse en el abismo del miedo y la desesperación ese día; sin embargo, el espíritu estadounidense prevaleció en un momento de crisis y brilló con una luz resistente y duradera. A raíz del desastre, nuestra familia humana se mantuvo unida en la presencia de Dios.

Su amor fluyó a través de nosotros y nos inspiró a encontrarnos unos con otros con ternura y misericordia.

Hay muchos eventos programados para conmemorar el 20 aniversario del 11 de septiembre en toda la región de Filadelfia y la nación. Estas conmemoraciones nos llaman con razón a reflexionar sobre un momento oscuro, así como sobre la fragilidad del don de la vida y al mismo tiempo, presentan una oportunidad para renovar nuestra confianza y esperanza en Dios.

Únanse a mí para orar por todos aquellos que todavía sufren por los momentos que destrozaron nuestro mundo hace 20 años; que encuentren consuelo y paz en Dios. Oremos también con corazones agradecidos por los sacrificios diarios de nuestros hombres y mujeres de servicio, policías, bomberos y los trabajadores de rescate. Que el Señor los envuelva en su manto de protección ahora y siempre.
