Throughout the onslaught of Russian forces invading Ukraine since Feb. 24, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Halych, the head of the worldwide Ukrainian Catholic Church, has remained in Kyiv with his people.

Taking refuge with others in the basement of Resurrection Cathedral in Kyiv, the archbishop continues to send out daily videos of encouragement, including the video below from Feb. 26, with subtitles in English.

Following is the text translation of his message of blessing and thanks, in English and Spanish.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Today is Saturday, February 26, and the sun is rising over Kyiv, over Ukrainian Kyiv, over Kyiv that is triumphing, over Kyiv that has survived another night, a night blessed by God.

Allow me to address all of you with a word of greeting, a word of blessing, and a word of thanks.

First of all, allow me to pass on to you the words of greeting and support from the Holy Father, Francis, who called me himself yesterday in order to express his support. He said literally the following words: “Farò tutto che é possibile.” (I will do everything possible.) Of course, to stop the war, so that innocent people do not die, so that Ukraine has the opportunity to develop freely. I would like every to be thankful to the Holy Father, because the whole global community is mobilizing itself in our support.

I would like to thank everyone today who in the last few days have sent me letters of support and solidarity with Ukraine, with the Ukrainian people, and with our Church.

I would like to thank the Bishops’ Conference of Europe and its president, the archbishop of Vilinius, archbishop Gintaras Grušas, as well as the bishops of Poland, Germany, France, England, Italy, USA, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, but it was particularly pleasant for me to receive a letter from the all the Catholic bishops of Kazakhstan expressing their support for our Ukraine and expressing their unity with our people in prayer.

To all those who are supporting Ukraine in various ways, in the name of our people, in the name of our state, in the name of besieged Kyiv, in whose streets battles are taking place, let me say a sincere “thank you.”

They say that when artillery speaks, muses are silent. Let the muses remain silent, but we Christians, we people, have no right to be silent.

In these moments when blood is being poured out on the land of Ukraine, when the words of Patriarch Joseph are being repeated, mountains of bodies and rivers of blood, in our cities and all the shores of the Dnipro river, from the borders with Belarus, to the shores of the Black Sea, no one has the right to be silent, because with a word, lives can be saved. But silence can kill.

I ask all those who heard our voice from Kyiv flowing with blood: fight for peace. Intercede for those who require your aid. Do everything so that the aggressor retreat and leave the land of Ukraine. Whoever you may be, whether you are leaders in parliament, politicians, military personnel or church leaders, do you work, say your word to support Ukraine.

I would particularly like to thank His All Holiness, Patriarch Bartholomew, who expressed his concern for my personal wellbeing here in Kyiv and shared his brotherly support and prayer. We see that in the face of death, in the face of brutal military force, every church schism and division falls, and we all unite in the name of God and the good of the person.

I want to thank all our bishops, especially those who are in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, all our priests who are in besieged cities and serve the Ukrainian people, who open their homes, who open their churches, their cellars, to all our monastic communities, to our seminaries, who open their buildings and residences to all those in need today.

I also would like to thank all our brothers and sisters, all our faithful, our bishops, our monastics, on the territory of Western and Central Ukraine. Today there are tens of hundreds of thousands of refugees moving in your direction. Accept them in the name of Christ, as emissaries of God. “He who accepts you accepts me,” said the Lord to His Apostles. In the name of God, receive those who knock at the door of your homes.

In this dramatic but heroic time, let us continue to pray.

Today, on this Saturday, we celebrate the Universal Commemoration of the Dead, and we especially pray for our soldiers who gave their lives for Ukraine, especially in these last days. We embrace in prayer the border guards of Snake Island in the Black Sea, our hero who with the price of his own life stopped Russian armies at Kherson by blowing up with himself a bridge across the Dnipro. Today the Ukrainian land and Ukrainian people are giving birth to many such heroes.

We pray for all those who gave their lives for Ukraine. We pray for the innocent victims among the civilian population: women, children, the elderly. Today we commend to God’s hands all those who have already departed this world and ask that the Lor receive them in His embrace.

Ukraine is conquering. Ukraine is fighting. But we ask the world today to be in solidarity with us and not to remain silent, because the word saves, the word builds peace. Silence and indifference kill.

From our golden-domed, holy city of Kyiv, the new Jerusalem, with my whole heart, I impart to you my blessing, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Alabado sea Jesucristo!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Hoy es sábado 26 de febrero de 2022 y el sol está amaneciendo sobre Kyiv. El sol está amaneciendo sobre la Kyiv ucraniana, la ciudad de Kyiv que está triunfando, sobre la Kyiv que logró resistir una noche más, una noche que fue difícil pero que fue una noche bendecida por Dios. En este tiempo permítanme dirigirme a todos ustedes con palabras de saludo, palabras de bendición y con palabras de agradecimiento.

En primer lugar, quiero hacerles llegar las palabras de saludo y de apoyo de Su Santidad, el Papa Francisco, quien ayer me llamó personalmente por teléfono para expresar su apoyo. Literalmente me dijo lo siguiente: “farò tutto quello che è possibile” “haré todo lo que sea posible”. Hará evidentemente todo lo posible para detener la guerra, para que no muera gente inocente, para que Ucrania tenga la posibilidad de desarrollarse libremente…

Quiero que todos estemos agradecidos al Santo Padre porque en verdad hoy empieza a movilizarse la comunidad de fieles de todo el mundo. Quiero también agradecer mucho hoy a todos aquellos que a lo largo de estos últimos días me enviaron cartas de apoyo y solidaridad para con el pueblo ucranio y para con nuestra Iglesia.

Quiero agradecer a las conferencias episcopales de Europa y a nuestra cabeza, al arzobispo de Vilnius, Mons. Gintaras Grušas, así como también a los obispos de Polonia, Alemania, Francia, Inglaterra, Italia, EEUU, Eslovaquia, la República Checa, Hungría, Croacia… De modo particular fue una alegría especial recibir la carta de solidaridad firmada por todos los obispos Católicos de Kazakhstán que expresaron su apoyo para con nuestra Ucrania expresando su unión en oraciones para con nuestro pueblo. A todos aquellos quienes de diferentes modos están apoyando a Ucrania; ¡en nombre de nuestro pueblo, en nombre de nuestra nación… en nombre de nuestro Kyiv sitiado! Nuestro Kyiv que presencia luchas en sus propias calles, quiero decirles un sincero GRACIAS

Dicen que cuando suenan las armas, las musas callan. Las musas, si quieren, que callen… pero nosotros cristianos, nosotros, hombres y mujeres no tenemos derecho a callar.

En estos momentos en los que se derrama sangre en nuestra tierra Ucrania, momentos cuando una vez más se hacen realidad las palabras de Su Beatitud, el cardenal Joseph Slipyy, se amontonan los cadáveres y ríos de sangre corren en todas nuestras ciudades y a lo largo de las riberas del viejo río Dnipró… desde la frontera con Bielorrusia pasando por Kyiv y hasta el Mar Negro… en estos momentos, nadie tiene derecho a callar. Porque con la palabra se puede salvar. Y con el silencio… se puede matar.

Yo hoy le pido a todo aquel que nos escucha, a todo aquel a quien llegue nuestra voz, la voz de nuestra Kyiv sangrante: ¡por favor luchad por la paz, interceded por aquellos que necesitan vuestra ayuda, hagamos todo lo posible por que el agresor se detenga y se vaya ya de la tierra ucraniana! Quien quiera que seáis: la cabeza de un país o de un parlamento, así seáis políticos o militares, ministros de la iglesia… sea cual fuere vuestro puesto: haced lo que esté de vuestra parte: ¡hablad! Decid vuestra palabra en apoyo a Ucrania.

Quiero agradecer de modo particular a su beatitud el patriarca Bartolomeo, quien se interesó por mi persona en particular y por las circunstancias en las que estamos aquí en Kyiv y me aseguró su apoyo fraterno y su oración. Podemos ver como ante el rostro de la muerte, ante el rostro de la fuerza militar brutal todas las divisiones eclesiales caen y nos unimos todos en el nombre de Dios para el bien del hombre.

Quiero agradecer de todo corazón a nuestros obispos, de modo particular a aquellos que se encuentran en Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, a todos los sacerdotes que se encuentran en las ciudades sitiadas y sirven al pueblo Ucraniano a aquellos que abren sus casas, abren sus templos, sus sótanos… a todas nuestras comunidades religiosas… a todos los seminarios que abren las puertas de sus conventos y de sus casas a aquellos que lo necesitan…

Quiero agradecer a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a nuestros fieles, a nuestros religiosos y religiosas, a nuestros obispos que están en las tierras del centro y el oeste de Ucrania. Hacia vosotros se dirigen miles y miles de refugiados: Recibidlos. En nombre de Cristo. Como a enviados de Dios. Quien a vosotros os recibe, a mí me recibe dijo una vez Jesucristo a sus apóstoles. Recibid en nombre de Dios a aquellos que golpean a la puerta de vuestras casas.

En este tiempo dramático y a la vez tiempo heroico nosotros seguimos rezando. Hoy según nuestro calendario, es el sábado anterior al comienzo de la cuaresma, y hoy nosotros de modo particular rezamos por nuestros soldados… los que entregaron sus vidas por Ucrania. De modo particular por aquellos que murieron en estos últimos días. De modo particular recordamos en nuestras oraciones a los héroes de las fronteras, de la Isla de las Serpientes en el Mar Negro… A nuestro héroe que a precio de su propia vida detuvo las fuerzas armadas rusas cerca de Kherson haciendo explotar un puente que atravesaba el río Dnipró. Ucrania hoy está dando a luz muchos héroes como ellos.

Rezamos por todos aquellos que dieron su vida por Ucrania, rezamos por las víctimas inocentes de la población civil, por las mujeres, los niños, los ancianos… Hoy entregamos en las manos de Dios las almas de todos aquellos que dejaron esta tierra y rogamos a Dios que los reciba en sus abrazos.

¡Ucrania triunfa! ¡Ucrania lucha! Pero le pedimos al mundo que se solidarice con nosotros. Que no se calle. Porque la palabra salva. La palabra construye la paz. El callar y la indiferencia matan. Desde nuestra Kyiv, la de los templos techados de oro, Nuevo Jerusalén, de todo corazón les doy mi bendición en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, amén. ¡Alabado sea Jesucristo!
