The American Catholic Historical Society will hold a lecture on Sept. 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at The Society House. The lecture will be given by Dr. Domenic Vitiello (University of Pennsylvania) based on his book, The Sanctuary City: Immigrant, Refugee, and Receiving Communities in Postindustrial Philadelphia.
Dr. Domenic Vitiello is an associate professor in the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on city and regional planning, migrant communities, and the immigrant city. In addition to his work on sanctuary cities, he has also been conducting ongoing research on the destruction, preservation, neighborhood changes in Chinatowns in the United States and Canada. His many publications have appeared in Urban Studies, Planning Perspectives, and PlanPhilly.
In this talk, Dr. Domenic Vitiello (University of Pennsylvania) will explore the meanings of sanctuary and the history of sanctuary cities and sanctuary movements in Greater Philadelphia and North America since the 1980s, including Catholic contributions to the movement.
