Specialists with Prevention Academy, an initiative of St. Joseph’s University that aims to prevent addiction and support recovery through education, outreach, and services, visited students at Cardinal O’Hara High School Dec. 3.

The innovative program helps youths of Delaware County to make smarter, healthier choices through education about substance use prevention.

Supported by a grant from Delaware County’s $62.5 million opioid settlement fund, Prevention Academy brings its program directly to classrooms across the region.

Each week, program specialists engage students in grades 5 to 12 through interactive workshops. The sessions empower students with essential skills including substance-refusal strategies, media literacy and how to support peers.

The participating students from Cardinal O’Hara High School were among the more than 2,700 from about a dozen Delaware County schools. More are slated to take part in the program during spring 2025.

Prevention Academy underscores St. Joseph’s commitment to addiction prevention by educating the next generation of prevention and recovery specialists and supporting students in recovery through the University’s Center for Addiction and Recovery Education (CARE).
