Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez will celebrate a special Mass and awards ceremony Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul to recognize the contributions of catechists and religious education leaders in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The annual event will celebrate the men and women who have selflessly shared their faith and dedicated their time to teaching and guiding others in their faith journeys.

The ceremony will highlight the vital service that parish-based catechists, directors, and coordinators of religious education offer in nurturing the faith of children and youth. These dedicated individuals will be acknowledged for their years of service, some reaching remarkable milestones of 5, 10, 20, 30, or even 45 years of ministry.

Archbishop Pérez will lead a reflection on the importance of catechesis in building a strong and vibrant Catholic community.

“Catechists are not just teachers, they are companions on the faith journey,” said Wanda Nouel, interim director of the Office for Catechetical Formation.

The event also will highlight the future of faith formation as the archdiocese supports and encourages the growth of catechetical programs in local parishes in a continued commitment to teaching the faith.

The Mass and ceremony will be hosted by the archdiocesan Office for Catechetical Formation and the PDCARE (Parish Directors, Coordinators and Administrators of Religious Education) Association.

All parish catechists and leaders are invited to attend the celebration and join in honoring all those who dedicate themselves to educating the next generation of Catholics and nurturing the faith to build a vibrant Catholic community.
