Sister Marie Therese Carr, OSF, 88, died in Assisi House on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 67 years. Sister Marie Therese was born Mary Florberta Carr in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of St. Benedict Parish and a graduate of the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy in Gwynedd Valley. She entered the congregation in 1955 and professed her first vows in 1958. She earned a BA in English from Mount St. Mary’s College and an MA in English from St. Michael’s College. She ministered primarily in education.
Sister Marie Therese ministered for 25 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She taught at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Essex; St. Lawrence School, Baltimore; St. Stephen School, Bradshaw; Immaculate Conception School, Towson; St. Joseph School, Fullerton; The Catholic High School of Baltimore; and Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Baltimore.
She served in education for an additional 13 years in the Diocese of Wilmington teaching at Holy Angels School in Newark and Padua Academy in Wilmington.
After more than 35 years in education, Sister Marie Therese switched gears and became the archivist for Neumann University in Aston for 23 years during which time she also served as chaplain for the women’s volleyball team. She then served in local house ministry for one year before moving to Assisi House, the congregational retirement residence in 2020, where she served in prayer and hospitality until her death.
All services will be held in Assisi House on Monday, January 13, 2025, and will be livestreamed. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Marie Therese is survived by her Franciscan family.
