Florence Smith was appointed the first Chief Operating Officer of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia on Oct. 1, 2025, bringing more than 18 years of leadership experience to the newly created role.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia have named Florence Smith as the congregation’s first Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective Oct. 1.

The newly created role is designed to streamline operations and support the elected leadership team in focusing on the spiritual and personal well-being of sisters and the vitality of their ministries.

Smith will oversee key departments including communications, environmental services, food services, plant operations, and more, while collaborating with human resources, wellness services, and Red Hill Farm, the congregation’s six-acre community supported agriculture farm.

“Religious life is evolving, and so must our structures,” said Congregational Minister Sister Theresa Firenze, OSF. “This new role helps us respond with foresight and hope.”

Smith brings more than 18 years of experience with the congregation, having served as Director of Communications and, most recently, as Executive Director of Services.
