Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez extended his “fraternal prayers and best wishes” Nov. 13 to fellow bishops following their election to key positions at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ plenary assembly in Baltimore Wednesday.

Locally, Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia was elected chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace.

Nationally, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City was elected Conference president, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend was elected Conference secretary, and Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville was elected vice president.

Other newly elected committee chairs include Archbishop Jeffrey S. Grob of Milwaukee (Canonical Affairs), Bishop Peter L. Smith of Portland, Oregon (Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs), Bishop William A. Wack, CSC, of Pensacola-Tallahassee (Evangelization and Catechesis), Bishop Mark O’Connell of Albany (Protection of Children and Young People), and Archbishop Alexander K. Sample of Portland, Oregon (Religious Liberty).

The USCCB said on Facebook, “Our prayers accompany the newly elected secretary and chairmen as they embark on their service, committed to advancing the mission of the Church in the United States.”
