Catholics gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Feb. 18 for Ash Wednesday Mass celebrated by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez, marking the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. Lent is a 40‑day period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that extends from Ash Wednesday through Holy Thursday, in preparation for the celebration of the Paschal Triduum and the Easter season.
