Year of Faith lecture to show compatibility of science, religion
Atheists contend that religious faith is not intellectual and therefore is not worth taking seriously. Professor Brad Gregory will tackle the topic head-on during his talk, “Science vs. Religion? The Compatibility of Catholicism and the Natural Sciences” on Thursday, Sept. 12 at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood. The talk is part of Archbishop Charles Chaput’s Year of Faith Lecture Series.
New financial data show details of Church’s work in health care, social services, education
Following an unprecedented financial report from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Office for Financial Services in early July, 15 archdiocesan entities for the first time made their financial statements public Friday, Aug. 2. The statements, audited by the accounting firm Grant Thornton for archdiocesan corporations operating in health care, social services and education, present a picture of their finances as of June 30, 2012, the end of that fiscal year. Catholic Cemeteries Office among Church entities releasing 2012 financial report
In keeping with Archbishop Charles Chaput’s June pledge to release audited financial statements for every major archdiocesan entity, a statement audited by the accounting firm Grant Thornton for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for Catholic Cemeteries covering the year ending June 30, 2012, has just been released.
Catholic mission school uses $500K grant for innovative program
The mid-July announcement that Germantown’s DePaul Catholic School was awarded a $500,000 grant by the Philadelphia School Partnership to adopt an innovative instructional program was big news. Well it should be. The instructional model put together by New York-based Seton Educational Partners, called Phaedrus, divides the students’ school day into 25- to 30-minute sessions between computer time and traditional oral instruction.
Church property auction nets almost $2 million for parishes, archdiocese
Of the eight church properties listed in an auction by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 24, seven attracted bids that archdiocesan officials had hoped they would. “We got our asking price on all of them,” said Deacon Thomas Croke, director for real estate services of the archdiocesan Office for Property Services.

Black Catholics from across U.S. pack cathedral for convention Mass
It was possibly the most elegant gathering of Black Catholics in the history of the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. Almost 1,000 Knights and Ladies (especially the Ladies) of the Knights of Peter Claver filled the grand old cathedral on July 21 for the opening Mass of Thanksgiving as part of their annual convention, and first ever in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
