Sister Marlene Smittle, S.S.J. (formerly Sister Joseph Virginia), 78, died July 24 at St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown.
The daughter of the late Charles and Mary Smittle, she attended St. Martin of Tours Grade School and St. Hubert High School in Philadelphia.
In September 1959 she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Chestnut Hill, and professed her final vows in 1967.
Sister Marlene ministered in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the dioceses of Camden and Paterson.
The funeral Mass was celebrated July 29 at St. Joseph Villa.
She is survived by cousins Sue Ann and Thomas Moffett as well as members of her congregation, the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Donations may be made in Sister Marlene’s name to St. Joseph Villa, 110 Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown, PA.
