HARRISBURG, Pa. (CNS) — Bishop Ronald W. Gainer of Harrisburg had successful surgery for a hip replacement at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill Aug. 5.

Dr. Richard Boal of the Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania, who performed the operation, said the bishop, who turns 67 Aug. 24, “did great” and expected him to be discharged within a few days, according to a diocesan news release.

Bishop Gainer hopes to resume a part-time schedule in about a month, following physical rehabilitation, the diocese said.

“Prayers of thanksgiving for the successful operation and a speedy recovery are welcome,” it said.

Bishop Gainer was installed as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg March 19. He was head of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, when Pope Francis named him to head the Pennsylvania diocese in late January. He succeeded Bishop Joseph P. McFadden, who died May 2, 2013.

Father Robert M. Gillelan Jr., vicar general, will handle the normal administration of the Diocese while Bishop Gainer recovers from surgery.
