125. But if a married couple are indeed seeking the interior freedom, mutual self-giving, and self-sacrificial love to which God’s covenant summons us all, then it is hard to imagine in what sense contraception is necessary and essential. The Church believes that insistence on contraception rests upon myths about marriage which are not true. As Pope Pius XII explained: There are some who would allege that happiness in marriage is in direct proportion to the reciprocal enjoyment in conjugal relations. It is not so: indeed, happiness in marriage is in direct proportion to the mutual respect of the partners, even in their intimate relations.

In its introduction, the document says its aim is to present “Catholic teaching in a way that is fresh, insightful, and accessible to contemporary Catholics and all people of good will.” The catechesis “offers a narrative beginning with our creation, soberly noting our fall and the challenges we face, but emphasizing God’s plan for our salvation. Love is our mission, and it is by loving God and one another that we will be fully alive.”
