See the daily excerpt from the preparatory catechesis for the 2015 World Meeting of Families, “Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive.”

160. The progressive nature of conversion shapes our ability to understand and live the Church’s teaching. Speaking about the moral progress of married Christians Saint John Paul II distinguished between “the law of gradualness” and the “gradualness of the law.” The “law of gradualness” refers to the progressive nature of conversion. As they recover from the wounds of sin, Christians grow in holiness in every area of their lives, including their sexuality. When they fall short, they need to return to the mercy of God made accessible in the sacraments of the Church.

In its introduction, the document says its aim is to present “Catholic teaching in a way that is fresh, insightful, and accessible to contemporary Catholics and all people of good will.” The catechesis “offers a narrative beginning with our creation, soberly noting our fall and the challenges we face, but emphasizing God’s plan for our salvation. Love is our mission, and it is by loving God and one another that we will be fully alive.”
