This little gem of a book reminds us how to rise above and grow in difficult times, with the pure, always-available power of mercy. With a great deal of honesty and humor Lamott describes her dysfunctional history, her struggles with addiction and sobriety, all the while showing us that we are not alone, that we’d all sometimes much rather punch someone in the face than turn the other cheek. Reading Lamott’s book feels like sitting down with a warm friend who wants to remind you that through it all, it really will be okay, that you are not alone, and that it is possible to avail yourself of mercy, even on the most difficult days. She dares us repeatedly, by using anecdotes both funny and poignant, to try every day to be open to mercy.
This book discussion will be limited to fifteen persons. For the first session of our book discussion group, participants should have read the first two chapters of Hallelujah Anyway, pages three to forty-two.
