Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez issued the following statement Aug. 28 regarding Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 storm that has killed at least 30 in the Caribbean and southeastern U.S., while causing widespread damage. You can also view this statement on Archbishop Pérez’s Facebook page.

I am stunned by the heartbreaking images of the devastation left by Hurricane Laura. The storm, now a tropical depression, caused severe damage to homes and businesses, and claimed the lives of several innocent people.

In the name of the people of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I extend my prayers and condolences to those who have been affected by this natural disaster and to those experiencing the effects of the hurricane.

I urge all people of goodwill to pray for our brothers and sisters who will face many challenges in the days ahead. May our prayers uplift their spirits during this time of sadness and devastation. May the Lord pour out his comfort and mercy upon all of those affected by Hurricane Laura in their time of need.
