Dr. Danielle Heeney, the new director of special education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, shares with Inside CatholicPhilly.com how students with disabilities are gradually gaining recognition for their gifts and contributions, both in the classroom and in the community.

Ultimately, she says, special education is based on the essence of Christ’s teachings, which stress “honoring, valuing and treating every life with dignity and respect.”
