Sister Maria Fatima, age 88, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas for 69 years, died peacefully on Sunday January 15, at McAuley Convent in Merion, Pennsylvania.
Sister’s beginning years of ministry encompassed teaching in primary grades throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Diocese of Atlanta. A shy, unassuming person, Maria Fatima spent many years assisting in various clerical positions in elementary schools. For more than 20 years she worked in the office with the Merion leadership team.
Once retired to McAuley Convent Maria Fatima’s ministry became one of prayer. She had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother which manifested itself in her gift of making rosaries in every color. She generously shared them with everyone who visited her. Fatima was a pray-er and a sharer. Along with sharing rosaries, she opened her top candy drawer and shared her love of candy with visitors.
Sister Maria Fatima lived her own “little way” in a quiet, unassuming manner. Her love of family brought her immense joy. She loved to tell stories about them and share them with us. We were blessed to have her among us.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. The funeral liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m. in the Convent of Mercy at 515 Montgomery Avenue, Merlon, Pa. 19066. Interment Sisters of Mercy Cemetery.
