Archbishop Pérez released the following statement Aug. 30 regarding Hurricane Idalia.
***
With deep sadness, I watched news of Hurricane Idalia’s expected landfall in Florida earlier today. I had hoped and prayed that Floridians would be spared the catastrophic conditions that have already claimed precious lives and destroyed so many homes and businesses.
In the name of the Church of Philadelphia and Her people, I extend my prayers and condolences to those who have been and will be affected by this natural disaster. The storm is far from over and is expected to inflict severe damage requiring months of recovery and rebuilding.
I urge everyone to pray for those who will face challenges in the days ahead and to support the coming relief efforts generously. May God comfort those affected by Hurricane Idalia in their time of need and may our Blessed Mother wrap them in her mantle of protection.
Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
