Reverend John A. Franey, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Eleanor Parish, Collegeville, died on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
Father Franey was born on September 1, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John B. Franey, and the late Lillian Binley. Father Franey attended Saint Columba Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Roman Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Franey was ordained on May 18, 1963, at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John J. Krol. Father Franey served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Frances Cabrini Parish, Fairless Hills; Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Anastasia Parish, Newtown Square; Saint Helena Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Matthew Parish, Philadelphia. In January 1987 he was appointed Pastor, Saint Eleanor Parish, Collegeville, and named Pastor Emeritus in June 2003. He also served as Parochial Vicar with Senior priest status, Saint Agnes Parish, West Chester, from June 2003 until his retirement in June 2008.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Eleanor Church, Collegeville, on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 10:00 AM followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez will celebrate the Funeral Mass for Father Franey at Saint Eleanor Church, on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 11:30 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Joseph Shenosky, Reverend Monsignor Michael T. McCulken, Reverend Monsignor James P. McCoy, and Reverend Philip J. Lowe will be the homilist.
Father Franey is survived by many cousins. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, PA.
