Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez

Archbishop Pérez issued a statement Sept. 26 congratulating the Most Reverend James F. Checchio, Bishop of Metuchen, on his appointment as Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans by Pope Leo XIV on Sept. 24.

“I was filled with great joy to learn that Pope Leo XIV appointed Most Reverend James F. Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans.

Bishop Checchio has distinguished himself as a priest of the Diocese of Camden and through his service as shepherd of the Diocese of Metuchen. He has devoted himself to great pastoral care for souls while offering the Church his gifts for administration. His diverse experiences have included completing his doctoral degree in Canon Law in Rome and his M.B.A. degree at La Salle University, and serving as Rector of the North American College in Rome.

His expertise in the field of communications especially will serve the Archdiocese of New Orleans well, as he joins Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond in sharing the Good News of the compassionate love of Jesus Christ with all whom he encounters.

In the name of the priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I offer heartfelt congratulations and prayers to Bishop Checchio as he prepares to assume his new role in service to the Church. May the Holy Spirit continue to grace him with wisdom, strength, and apostolic zeal.”
