Talk about an auspicious debut.
For the first time in school history, Holy Ghost Prep is competing in the Philadelphia Catholic League. It has taken only one week for the Firebirds to establish themselves as a potential boys’ soccer juggernaut.
The Firebirds opened with three consecutive victories, outscoring Archbishop Carroll, Lansdale Catholic, and Conwell-Egan by a combined 15-1.
The first-place Firebirds will face a major test when they meet second-place Archbishop Wood at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ramp Playground as part of the PCL’s annual Play Day.
Although Holy Ghost Prep’s early success might make its transition appear seamless, senior tri-captain Sean Fleming acknowledged that entering the Catholic League initially created some uncertainty.
“At first, I was very intimidated because I wasn’t sure how we would compete in such a strong league,” said Fleming. “I know a few of the guys were confident, but a few of the guys on the team thought we would struggle. But we were all excited to compete in the PCL.”
Those concerns have quickly disappeared.
The Firebirds introduced themselves to their new league with a resounding 10-1 victory over Archbishop Carroll on Sept. 9. Junior tri-captain John Pawlowski scored the first PCL goal in Holy Ghost Prep history and followed it with three more consecutive tallies.
The significance of becoming the first Firebird to score in a Catholic League contest did not occur to Pawlowski until later.
“It was honestly a really cool feeling, especially with it being our first PCL game,” said Pawlowski. “Going into the game, I definitely thought about it being our first-ever PCL game and how much it meant to our team and the school.
“But when I scored the first goal, the thought of me being the first PCL goal scorer in HGP history didn’t really come to me until after the game.”
By then, Pawlowski had done considerably more than score one historic goal. His four-goal performance helped transform the Firebirds’ league opener into an unforgettable evening.
“To score four goals in our first PCL game was special because it set the bar not just for me as a player, but for our team and what we want to accomplish this year,” said Pawlowski.
Six other Firebirds contributed goals, underscoring the balance that has helped Holy Ghost Prep emerge as a serious PCL contender.
“The boys in general are very team-oriented this year,” said first-year coach Amanda Kirby. “It’s been great to see how the boys are holding each other accountable.”
That chemistry did not develop overnight.
After Holy Ghost Prep announced its move into the Catholic League during a schoolwide meeting, the players began preparing for the increased challenge. Offseason lifting sessions started in March, providing an opportunity for the Firebirds to grow physically and become closer as a team.
“We seemed to bond together a lot,” said Fleming. “I think the offseason training and lift(ing) helped grow the morale of the team because we all realized we would be a very strong team, and with Coach Kirby, we would be led very well.
“When tryouts started and the teams came out, that’s when I knew we would be a very strong, well-rounded team.”
The results have supported Fleming’s confidence.
Two days after defeating Carroll, the Firebirds blanked Lansdale Catholic, 3-0. Pawlowski, senior Owen Hanrahan, and junior Jack Walsh supplied the goals, while senior Matt Cole contributed two assists.
Playing on their home field for the third consecutive game on Sept. 15, Holy Ghost defeated Conwell-Egan, 2-0. Senior tri-captain and goalkeeper Jack Polek registered his second shutout of the young league season.
Hanrahan and Pawlowski scored against the Eagles, giving both players goals in each of Holy Ghost’s first three PCL games.
The Firebirds’ leadership structure has provided another advantage. Fleming, Pawlowski, and Polek serve as tri-captains, while a fourth captain is selected for each game based on how players distinguish themselves during training.
“I’m very honored to be a captain this year,” said Fleming, who also held the role last season. “It was very stressful over the offseason trying to motivate the team to get prepared for the PCL, but I got help from John Pawlowski. He helped me a lot during the offseason.”
The season is still young, and Saturday’s encounter with Archbishop Wood should reveal more about how the Firebirds compare with the league’s strongest teams.
Three games into their new era, however, Holy Ghost Prep is no longer wondering whether it belongs in the Philadelphia Catholic League. The Firebirds have already begun contemplating how far they might go.
“As long as we stay healthy and our practices stay sharp,” said Fleming, “I think we can compete for a PCL title.”
