Bishop John J. McIntyre presided at the kick-off event for Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl Monday, Jan. 27 at St. Martin de Porres Parish in Philadelphia. Before blessing the Rice Bowls, the bishop encouraged families to pray, fast, learn about CRS’ work in other countries and donate throughout the Lenten season. Administered by Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Rice Bowl encourages participants to live in solidarity with the poor through prayer, fasting and donating money.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia marked the beginning of its 39th consecutive year participating in the effort. Mary Cook, the coordinator for St. Martin’s cupboard, told how CRS’ Rice Bowl supports local people in need. (Photos by Sarah Webb)
