Reverend Joseph J. Meehan, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Eugene Parish, Primos, died on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Father Meehan was born on November 25, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late James H. Meehan, and the late Loretta G. Donnelly. Father Meehan attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Saint Joseph Preparatory High School Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Meehan was ordained on May 13, 1961, at The Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia by Most Reverend John J. Krol. Father Meehan served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Agnes Parish, West Chester; Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish Croydon; Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, Philadelphia; Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Matthias Parish, Bala Cynwyd with senior status.
He also served on the faculty at Cardinal O’Hara High School, Springfield. He was Pastor, Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, Philadelphia, from 1977-1989. In April 1989 he was appointed Pastor, Saint Eugene Parish, Primos, and named Pastor Emeritus, there in 2006.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, Springfield, on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. followed by a viewing.
A Parish Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Most Reverend John J. McIntyre will celebrate the Funeral Mass for Father Meehan at Saint Eugene Church, Primos, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
The viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John J. Jagodzinski, Reverend Monsignor Michael J. Flood, Reverend John P. McNamee, and Reverend John Lyons will be the homilist.
Father Meehan is survived by many nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeardon.
