Retired Permanent Deacon Jose M. Mendez (1989) passed away on April 16, 2025, at the age of 89.

He was ordained on June 4, 1989, by His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, Philadelphia. He was assigned to Saint Ambrose Parish, Philadelphia, he retired from active ministry on November 2, 2010, assisting when he was able until his health declined.

Deacon Mendez was born on October 28, 1935, to the late Ciprian and Marina de Mendez. He was a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. He was a high school graduate. Working for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the City of Philadelphia.

Deacon Mendez is survived by his wife of 64 years, Luz A. (Linda) (nee: Candelaria) Mendez. He is also survived by his daughters: Virginia, Linda Marie, and Jocelyn; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his sister Juanita Diaz.

Reception of the Body and viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, beginning at 8:30 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at Saints Ambrose Church, 401 E. Roosevelt Blvd, Philadelphia. Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D. will be the principal celebrant and the homilist. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem.
