Sister Miriam Theresa Lavelle, RSM
Sister Miriam Theresa Lavelle, age 94, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died peacefully on February 22, 2026, at McAuley Convent in Merion, PA.
Theresa Lavelle was born on October 10, 1931, in Philadelphia, the youngest child of William Lavelle and Bridget McHale Lavelle, both of whom were born in Ireland. Theresa shared a special bond of love with her parents, her sister, Peg, and her brother, Buddy, a bond that united them and their families throughout their lives. Her faith was rooted in her Irish Catholic heritage, passed down by her parents and nurtured through her Catholic education at St. Stephen Parish School and Little Flower High School. After graduating, Theresa entered the Mater Misericordiae Convent in Merion, PA, where she began a 74-year journey as a Sister of Mercy. Theresa received the religious name Sister Miriam Theresa and, on March 12, 1952, professed her vows, choosing “Love is repaid by Love alone” as her lifelong motto.
Sister Miriam Theresa lived her motto in her ministries, repaying the love she knew with a joyful, kind, merciful, and welcoming presence to all she met. With her Elementary Education degree from Villanova University, Miriam Theresa served as a teacher and principal in parish schools in the Philadelphia and Allentown Dioceses for 26 years. Earning a Master’s Degree in Theology from LaSalle College prepared her for the next 28 years, during which she served in many parishes as Pastoral Minister and Coordinator of Adult Education. This phase of her journey led her to the South, where she ministered in Richmond, VA; Jacksonville, NC; Port Orange, FL; and finally, Orlando, FL. There was no limit to Miriam Theresa’s zeal for bringing souls to know and love God, the Love of her life. Inviting, welcoming, and accompanying faith-seeking adults was her greatest joy and a treasured gift to countless souls whose lives she influenced and inspired. To this day, colleagues and co-workers praise her dedication to spreading the Gospel and leading others to God, and they recall their time with her with much fondness and gratitude.
After returning home from the South, Miriam Theresa began her ministry as a volunteer in the Gift Shop at Mercy Hospital and later served as a greeter in the North Lobby at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital. Her warm, enthusiastic welcome put visitors at ease, and her loving care made a meaningful difference in their day. As a sister in community, Miriam Theresa was full of life: kind, loving, positive, upbeat, and fun, always with a smile and an interest in others. She was an avid fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams, a self-appointed sideline coach for the Eagles, a Jeopardy Junkie, an admirer of Dancing with the Stars, and a lover of games. Her family received the gift of her fidelity and loving care for each member, and her example of love, repaid by Love, remains her lasting legacy. We remember how she loved God and us, and with joyful hearts, we give thanks for the gift of Sister Miriam Theresa Lavelle’s life. Go now in peace, faithful friend of God!
