Archdiocese considering sale of Catholic nursing homes

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as part of its ongoing effort to achieve financial stability, intends to market six nursing homes and one assisted-living facility for possible sale, it was announced Aug. 20. The archdiocese will also seek to outsource management or lease the 11 active archdiocesan cemeteries and two cemetery sites reserved for future use.

Local Catholics asked to take a hike on autumn pilgrimage to Cathedral

This fall it will be time to lace up some comfortable shoes and start stretching, because on Sunday, Oct. 13 the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will host a Pilgrimage of Faith to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul in celebration of the Year of Faith. Parishes from all over the Archdiocese are expected to participate, either by walking to the center city cathedral or taking transportation.

Year of Faith lecture to show compatibility of science, religion

Atheists contend that religious faith is not intellectual and therefore is not worth taking seriously. Professor Brad Gregory will tackle the topic head-on during his talk, “Science vs. Religion? The Compatibility of Catholicism and the Natural Sciences” on Thursday, Sept. 12 at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood. The talk is part of Archbishop Charles Chaput’s Year of Faith Lecture Series.

New financial data show details of Church’s work in health care, social services, education

Following an unprecedented financial report from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Office for Financial Services in early July, 15 archdiocesan entities for the first time made their financial statements public Friday, Aug. 2. The statements, audited by the accounting firm Grant Thornton for archdiocesan corporations operating in health care, social services and education, present a picture of their finances as of June 30, 2012, the end of that fiscal year. Catholic mission school uses $500K grant for innovative program

The mid-July announcement that Germantown’s DePaul Catholic School was awarded a $500,000 grant by the Philadelphia School Partnership to adopt an innovative instructional program was big news. Well it should be. The instructional model put together by New York-based Seton Educational Partners, called Phaedrus, divides the students’ school day into 25- to 30-minute sessions between computer time and traditional oral instruction.

Church property auction nets almost $2 million for parishes, archdiocese

Of the eight church properties listed in an auction by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 24, seven attracted bids that archdiocesan officials had hoped they would. “We got our asking price on all of them,” said Deacon Thomas Croke, director for real estate services of the archdiocesan Office for Property Services.
