Mass of Thanksgiving for Knights of Peter Claver

Almost 1,000 Knights and Ladies (especially the Ladies) of the Knights of Peter Claver filled the grand old cathedral on July 21 for the opening Mass of Thanksgiving as part of their annual convention, and first ever in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Younger sisters see smaller orders ahead, but say future still bright

The national meeting of Giving Voice welcomed about 75 women religious in their 20s, 30s and 40s who are members of orders with diminishing membership -- orders they feel they were called to join despite the demographic decline. The future is likely to be "intercongregational" living, with religious from different orders sharing both living space and spirituality with each other, said Sister Francois, organizer of the event.

Supreme Court strikes down federal marriage law

The U.S. Supreme Court today struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, ruling it unconstitutional. DOMA, as it is called, recognized marriage as a union of one man and one woman when it was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It denies federal benefits to same-sex partners who are legally married in states where same-sex marriage is permitted. CatholicPhilly.com will post a full story on the ruling soon.
