Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez released the following statement Oct. 27 on the appointment of Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory to the College of Cardinals.

In the name of the priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I extend heartfelt congratulations and prayerful best wishes to Cardinal-designate Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, on being named to College of Cardinals by Pope Francis.
This appointment is a source of tremendous hope and joy for the Church in United States. Cardinal-designate Gregory is a faithful shepherd of great energy and wisdom. It also marks an historic moment with the elevation of the first African-American bishop to the Cardinalate.
I ask all people of good will to join me in expressing gratitude to Pope Francis for making this appointment and in praying for Cardinal-designate Gregory as he prepares to accept this new role in service to the Universal Church.
Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez
