Sister Mary Ann Mulgrew, OSF, (formerly Sister John Miriam), 89, died in Assisi House on Thursday, November 28, 2024. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 66 years. Sister Mary Ann was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of St. Richard Parish and a graduate of Hallahan High School. She entered the congregation in 1955 and professed her first vows in 1958. She earned a BA in English from Neumann University (then Our Lady of Angels College) and a MS in Reading from Marywood College. She ministered primarily in education.
Sister Mary Ann ministered for 63 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She taught at Resurrection School, Chester; St. Ludwig’s, St. Bonaventure, St. Elizabeth, and St. Benedict Schools, all in Philadelphia; Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Morton; and St. Stanislaus School in Lansdale. In later years, she served for 21 years volunteering for both Assisi House, helping to drive and care for our elder sisters, and at Riddle Hospital in pastoral care. In 2009 she moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.
Additional ministry includes three years in the Allentown diocese teaching at St. Mauritius School in Ashland and Most Blessed Sacrament School in Bally.
All services will be held in Assisi House on Thursday, December 5, and will be livestreamed. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Mary Ann is survived by her many nieces and nephews, and her Franciscan family.
