James Meredith has been named the new principal of Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia, where he has been serving as assistant principal for academic affairs since July 2006. Meredith has served in teaching and administrative positions at Ryan since August 2001.

Inquiry suggests British-run hospitals stop using end-of-life protocol

MANCHESTER, England (CNS) -- A British official indicated the government will abandon a controversial end-of-life protocol following an anti-euthanasia campaign spearheaded by concerned Catholic physicians. An independent inquiry into the Liverpool Care Pathway has recommended that the protocol be abolished and replaced by "individualized care plans" after evidence of abuse and suffering was discovered.

Tiny Chester County church marks 175 years with prayers, singing – and horse and carriage

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput was the principal celebrant of an anniversary Mass July 7 at St. Malachi Church in Cochranville, Chester County, which was followed by a Celtic celebration on the grounds. St. Malachi is a mission church of Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Parkesburg, which will celebrate its 160th anniversary in September. Father Victor J. Eschbach, pastor of Our Lady of Consolation, and principal concelebrants rode to the church via horse and carriage, symbolic of the Jesuit priests who sporadically rode into the area from Delaware, Maryland and Philadelphia to celebrate Mass in barns and fields prior to the church's completion in 1838.

Longtime La Salle U. Scripture scholar, Brother Edward Davis, dies at 84

Brother Edward Davis, F.S.C., a La Salle University religion professor who taught courses on the Bible, died June 29 of liver cancer at De La Salle Hall, a nursing facility for Christian Brothers in Lincroft, N.J. He was 84.

Gov. Perry signs bill that puts new restrictions on abortion in Texas
