Phila. religious leaders call for end to violence on 9/11 anniversary

An interfaith gathering of Philadelphia religious and civic leaders used the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to call for peace and an end to violence. In keeping with the tone and mood of the meeting in the Arch Street Friends Meeting House in Old City Sunday, Philadelphia’s new Archbishop, Charles J. Chaput, recited the famous passage from Gospel of St. Matthew on revenge and love for one’s enemies: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy,’ but I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”

Permanent Deacon Zoilo Martes dies at 78

Deacon Zoilo Martes, 78, a permanent deacon assigned to St. Michael Parish, Philadelphia died Aug. 25, after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen, who died in February of this year.

Raleigh Diocese plans new 2,000-seat cathedral on 39-acre campus

A new 2,000-seat cathedral is the centerpiece of a 39-acre campus being planned by officials of the Diocese of Raleigh. Bishop Michael F. Burbidge said Sept. 7 that the project, estimated to cost between $75 million and $90 million, will include a two-story gathering hall and a three-story parking facility that will be built partially underground on land owned by the diocese, three miles west of downtown Raleigh.
