Sister Kathleen Kean, S.S.J., dies at 80

The Delaware County native was one of six children. She entered religious life in 1961, and two other sisters joined her. Sister Kathleen ministered in the archdioceses of Philadelphia and San Antonio, Texas.

Father Dennis Boyle, former Navy chaplain and pastor, dies at 75

Ordained in 1973, he served as a chaplain from 1989 to 2008, then as pastor of St. Jerome Parish in Philadelphia until 2015. He will be laid to rest Sept. 4 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Drexel Hill.

Sister of St. Joseph dies at 97

Sister Therese Ganly, S.S.J., entered religious life in 1943 and served in four dioceses, including the Philadelphia Archdiocese. She was preceded in death by a sister, also with the S.S.J. congregation.

Sister M. Dolores Kraemer, I.H.M. dies at age 90

After entering the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1949 and taking the name Sister Michael Dolores, she spent 72 years in the congregation, all in teaching ministry.

Sister Kathleen Theresa Maguire, I.H.M. dies at 82

The Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died in the 65th year of her religious life. She taught in many schools of the Philadelphia Archdiocese and was pastoral minister in parishes and health care facilities.

Sister Frances Antoinette Engler dies at age 80

The former Rosemary Frances Engler entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1959 and would go on to serve at Archbishop Ryan High School.

Sister Joseph Marion, I.H.M. dies; was longtime teacher

The former Mary Ann Gallagher of St. Matthew Parish, Philadelphia entered the I.H.M. sisters in 1945 and would go on to teach in Catholic elementary and high schools for 64 years before her retirement. She was 94.

Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO president, dies; Catholic faith shaped his career

Born into a family of coal miners in Pennsylvania, Trumka worked in the mines himself, but went to college and law school and became the nation's top labor leader. He died at 72 of a heart attack.

Brother James Gavin, beloved Franciscan friar, dies at 89

The Capuchin Franciscan was born to a large family in Ireland and eventually made his way to Pennsylvania and, through religious life, a 20-year assignment at St. John the Evangelist Parish in center city Philadelphia where he was humble but not meek.

Sister Mary Heenan, ministering in Phila. region, dies at 79

A sister of St. Joseph since 1960 and formerly known as Sister Joseph Constance, the native of Atlantic City served in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Diocese of Trenton. Funeral services will be livestreamed Aug. 5.
