Boston cardinal asks House to pass Health Care Conscience Rights Act

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of Boston, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, has asked members of the House to approve the Health Care Conscience Rights Act. Introduced March 5 by three House Republicans, the bill had 66 co-sponsors as of March 11.

Cardinals end pre-conclave meetings, hear report on Vatican bank

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- During their last meeting before entering the conclave to elect a new pope, the world's cardinals heard a report on the Vatican bank and continuing efforts to comply with international standards to prevent money laundering and the funding of terrorism. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told reporters that 152 cardinals, including those over 80 years old, were present for the final general congregation meeting March 11.

Pakistani church condemns arson attack on Christian colony in Lahore

NEW DELHI (CNS) -- The Catholic Church in Pakistan condemned a March 9 attack by an estimated 3,000 Muslims on a Christian colony in Lahore that left more than 175 buildings, including two churches and dozens of homes, torched and hundreds of people homeless. The attack came after a Christian sanitary worker allegedly criticized Mohammed three days earlier.

Bishops say they could not support rewritten Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Five bishops who lead committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said in a joint statement they could not support the rewritten reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which President Barack Obama signed into law March 7. The stumbling blocks for the bishops were the references to "sexual orientation" and "gender identity."

Voting for new pope to begin March 12

St. Charles Seminary plans to compress campus, close college buildings

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has announced March 7 that the huge building that houses the lower side (College Division) at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood will be closed and the seminary consolidated into what is now the upper side (Theology Division). As part of the overall plan of consolidation, the seminary will seek to lease or sell underutilized buildings and property, but at the same time implement new spiritual and academic programs for seminarians and lay adult theology students.

Teens enjoy day of fun, prayer to aid their public witness of Catholic faith

Approximately 200 teens and their adult chaperones enjoyed a day of exploring the Catholic faith, and having fun too, March 3 at Archbishop Carroll High School, Radnor. Formerly the archdiocesan Teen Convocation, the event was renamed Generation Phaith this year by the young people themselves, who helped organize the day of workshops, prayer, music and games.
